Maternity outerwear solves the bump in one of two ways. Some coats are cut with the extra room built in, which fits well in the later months but looks loose early on. Others use an adjustable panel, laces or a zip-in insert, so one coat covers a wider span — and in some cases can be worn afterwards without the insert.
Length and closure decide how practical a coat is day to day. A longer coat that still closes over the bump keeps more warmth than a short jacket that has to stay open. Where a coat is not designed to close over a late bump, the brand usually says so.
Fabric and lining are worth comparing across brands for warmth rather than price alone: wool blends, padded synthetics and technical shells behave very differently, and the composition is listed in each brand's own store.
