Over-bump, under-bump and after birth

Maternity knickers come in two basic cuts. Under-bump briefs sit low and stay out of the way, which suits early pregnancy and anyone who dislikes a waistband on the bump. Over-bump styles use a soft high panel that covers the whole bump and does not roll down, which many people prefer later on.

Fabric is where brands differ most. Cotton-rich knits are breathable and hold up to frequent washing; microfibre and modal are smoother under close-fitting clothes. Flat, covered seams matter more than usual if the waistband will sit against a stretched bump.
