Most of the difference between maternity dresses is where the extra room sits. Wrap and empire cuts release fabric from under the bust and tend to keep working across a growing bump. Ruched side seams stretch and relax, so the same dress reads differently in the second and third trimester. Fitted jersey shows the bump earliest and usually fits for a shorter stretch.
Fabric decides behaviour more than silhouette does. Heavier jersey and ponte hold their shape over a bump; light viscose and satin drape but cling more. Length is worth checking too: a maxi that fits at 20 weeks can sit shorter at 36 weeks as the hem rises over the bump.
If you want the dress after birth as well, check whether it has feeding access. Many maternity dresses do not, and the listings show when a brand describes both uses.
