The waistband is the real decision. An over-bump panel covers the whole bump and holds the jeans up without adjusting them, which many people prefer late in pregnancy. Under-bump waistbands sit low and disappear under a top but slip more as the bump grows. Side-panel and adjustable-button styles sit between the two and often fit the longest.
Fit works as it does in ordinary denim, with one caveat: the more rigid the fabric, the more the waistband has to do. Skinny and straight fits in stretch denim tend to keep their shape over months; wide-leg and barrel fits in rigid cotton depend almost entirely on the panel. Recovery — how well the leg springs back after wear — separates jeans that stay put from jeans that bag out.
Because maternity denim is often bought once and worn daily, it is worth comparing fabric composition and inside leg length across brands rather than price alone.
