Panel height, opacity and recovery

Three things separate maternity leggings: how high the panel sits, how opaque the fabric is when stretched, and how well it recovers after wear. A full over-the-bump panel stays put through the day; a lower panel is less visible under short tops but needs pulling up more often.

Opacity is worth checking because stretch thins the fabric exactly where it stretches most. Heavier interlock and brushed knits stay opaque over a bump, while thin single jersey often does not. Fabric weight, usually stated in the brand's product details, is a better guide than price.

Length varies more than in ordinary leggings, since the panel changes where the waist sits. If you plan to keep wearing them after birth, a foldable panel is the most adaptable option.
