Silhouette, fabric and timing

Empire and A-line silhouettes are the most forgiving over a bump, because the fabric releases from under the bust rather than fitting through the waist. Fitted and mermaid shapes can work but depend far more closely on the stage of pregnancy when the dress is worn.

Fabric decides how much the bump is defined. Heavier crepe and satin skim; fine chiffon and jersey follow the shape. Lace overlays sit somewhere between the two and hide seams well.

Timing matters more than usual: measurements taken weeks before the date may no longer apply. Brands that publish generous size ranges, adjustable ties or stretch panels make this easier, and alteration advice is on each brand's own site.
