Where to start when you buy maternity clothes

Most people need fewer pieces than they expect, but need them to work harder. Two or three bottoms with a waistband you actually like wearing, a handful of tops that still fit at 36 weeks, and one or two dresses cover most days. Buying the bottoms first is usually the practical order, because that is where regular clothes stop working first.

Waistbands are the one detail worth learning. Over-bump panels cover the whole bump and stay put without adjusting; under-bump styles sit low and disappear under a top but slip more as the bump grows; side-panel and adjustable-button waists sit between the two. The same three options appear across jeans, pants, shorts and skirts, so a preference you find once carries across the categories.

Timing matters more than size. Maternity patterns are cut for your pre-pregnancy size, with the room built in, so ordering a size up rarely helps — it adds width in the shoulders and hips instead of the front. Where sizing does vary is between brands, and each brand publishes its own chart in its store.

If you plan to breastfeed afterwards, it is worth checking which pieces have feeding access before you buy. Many maternity tops and dresses do not, while nursing styles are designed to open — those are collected separately under nursing clothes.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start buying maternity clothes?
Most people switch somewhere in the second trimester, and usually bottoms first — waistbands stop working before tops do. There is no fixed week; it depends on your shape and on how much stretch your existing clothes have.
What size do I order in maternity clothes?
Normally your pre-pregnancy size. Maternity patterns already add the room over the bump, so sizing up mainly adds width elsewhere. Sizing still differs between brands, so check the chart in the brand's own store.
Can maternity clothes be worn after birth?
Many pieces can, especially elastic-waist bottoms, panels that fold down and stretchy knit tops. Whether a garment also works for breastfeeding depends on whether the brand built feeding access into it, which the listing states.
Does Mamanida sell these clothes?
No. Mamanida compares maternity and nursing clothes across brands and links out to them. You complete the purchase in the brand's own store, which handles sizing, stock and shipping.
