Waistbands, fits and how long they last

The waistband is the real decision. An over-bump panel covers the whole bump and holds jeans up without adjusting them, which many people prefer late in pregnancy. Under-bump waistbands sit low and disappear under a top, but slip more as the bump grows. Side-panel and adjustable-button styles sit somewhere between the two and often fit the longest.

Fit works the same way as regular denim, with one caveat: the more rigid the fabric, the more the waistband has to do. Skinny and straight fits in stretch denim tend to keep their shape over months; wide-leg and barrel fits in rigid cotton depend almost entirely on the panel. Recovery — how well the leg springs back after wear — is what separates jeans that stay put from jeans that bag out.
