Choosing outerwear that lasts the pregnancy

Start with the season you actually need covered. A pregnancy spans two or three of them, and a light shell, an unlined denim or blazer style, and a padded winter coat are genuinely different purchases. Many people end up buying one warm layer for the months that fall in winter and layering for the rest, rather than looking for a single jacket that does everything.

Room over the bump comes from the cut, not the size. Panels or gussets at the side seams, a swing or A-line shape, adjustable ties and expandable zip inserts all keep a jacket closable in the third trimester, while a straight-cut jacket usually stops closing at some point. Sizing up in regular outerwear is the alternative, but it adds width in the shoulders and sleeves too.

Then compare the practical details: how the fabric behaves (water-resistant shells versus wool and quilted fills), whether pockets and a hood are included, and how the jacket layers over a sweater. Some pieces are designed to be worn afterwards, and a few are explicitly babywearing jackets with an insert — that applies only to the styles the brand describes that way. Each brand lists its own measurements and materials in its store.
