Choosing a nursing bra: closures, support and sizing

The closure is the first decision. Drop-down clips open one cup at a time and give the most predictable coverage, which is why they are the most common everyday option. Crossover and pull-aside styles have no hardware at all — easier one-handed and softer to sleep in, with less structure. Some bras combine a clip with a stretch panel so the cup holds shape when it is closed.

Support depends on the band and the cup construction more than on whether the bra has wires. Wireless bras with a wide band and firm knit can hold a heavier bust comfortably; flexible-wire nursing bras exist too, and brands that offer them usually state that the wire is designed to sit clear of the milk ducts. Seamless styles disappear under fitted tops but offer less shaping.

Sizing is the part most people find tricky. The ribcage expands during pregnancy and the bust changes again in the first weeks after birth, so brands commonly suggest measuring late in pregnancy and choosing a bra with adjustment room — extra hooks, stretch cups or a wide back. A sleep or lounge bra in a soft knit is often the most forgiving through that period.

Each brand publishes its own sizing guidance and fabric details in its store, and cup sizing in particular is not interchangeable between brands.
